Bagh Bhairav Jatra begins today

Kathmandu, Aug 17: Bagh Bhairav Jatra, a cultural festival, has begun here today. The festival is observed especially in Kirtipur, a part of the Kathmandu Valley, on the first day of Nepali month of Bhadra where an idol of Hindu god Bagh Bhairav is carried on a chariot through the streets, with devotees playing local traditional musical instruments, chanting hymns in the process.


On the occasion, devotees worship at Bagh Bhairav temple. A myth has it that one is blessed with good health and success if he or she makes a round of Bagh Bhairav temple for 108 times on the day. Animals like buffalos, goats and sheep are sacrificed at a fair organised on the occasion.
This morning, the statue of Bagh Bhairav was dipped into nearby pond in Kirtipur before taking it around the local Bagh Bhairav temple. RSS
