Surya Nepal Eastern Open begins

DHARAN, December 27: Shiva Ram Shrestha and Amateur Tanka Bahadur Karki share lead after the first round of the Surya Nepal Eastern Open at the Par-70 Nirvana Country Club on Wednesday.

Both Shrestha and Karki fired four-under 66 on the opening day. Sanjay Lama carded three-under 67. Jayaram Ram Shrestha, Rame Magar and Amateur Sukra Bahadur Rai shot two-under 68 to be joint fourth. Local pro Mani Rai and Deepak Acharya carded even-par 70 to be tied seventh. Deepak Magar, Shiva Kumar Majhi, Deo Raj Pakhrin, Bhuwan Kumar Rokka and Amateur Yubaraj Bhujel are tied 10th at one-over 71.

Shiva Ram carded two-under 34 on the front nine with the help of birdies on third, fifth, sixth and ninth hole against bogeys on first and fourth hole. On the back nine, he made birdies on 10th, 11th and 12th hole against a single bogey on the 14th for two-under 32.

Tanka carded three-under 33 on the front nine with birdies on second, fifth and sixth holes. He turned in a one-under 33 on the back nine with birdies on 11th and 18th holes against bogey on 13th hole.

Sanjay carded four-under 32 on the front none with birdies on second, third, sixth and ninth holes. On the back nine he scored birdie on the 10th hole but dropped shots on 11th and 15th hole for one-over 35.

Jayaram scored one-under 35 on the front nine with birdies on first, sixth and seventh holes against bogeys on fourth and ninth holes. On the second nine, he carded birdies on 11th, 12th and 18th holes against bogeys on par-3s 14th and 17th holes for one-under 33.

Rame scored birdies on second and fifth holes against bogey on the opening hole for one-under 35 on the first half. On the second half, he carded birdies on 12th and 16th holes against bogey on 14th hole.

Amateur Sukra carded two-under 34 on the first nine with hep of birdies on sixth and ninth holes. On the back nine, he carded sole birdie on the 18th hole against bogey of 12th hole for even-par 34.

Total of 61 golfers 30 pros and 31 amateurs are taking part in the fourth event of the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2017-18. The tournament is organized by Nepal Professional Golfers Association under the sponsorship of Surya Nepal Pvt Ltd. Cut will be applied after the second round with top 21 pros and six amateurs making the cut for the final two rounds. Also, the amateur who survive the pro-cut score will be eligible to play the final round. The total cash purse of the tournament is Rs 630,000. The top three pros will receive Rs 115,000, Rs 74,000 and Rs 53,000 respectively.
